Nantes Planetarium: heading for space!

With your head in the stars, this visit promises to be incredible

The history of the Nantes planetarium

It all started with a temporary project for the 150th anniversary of Jules Verne's birth. A company specialising in planetariums decided to install a dome for the occasion, in which the starry sky was reproduced.

During this event, the spectators were immediately seduced by the idea and the concept. The programme was launched: the city of Nantes decided to create one on their territory.

Since 1981, the people of Nantes and tourists alike have been jostling to admire the stars in the first planetarium in the province. Little by little, the place grew and expanded to the delight of visitors.

The planetarium entered the digital age in 2005, with video projectors replacing the original projector.

Discover the stars with your family

Come and explore the Nantes planetarium with your children from the age of 3. However, the site's team advises visitors not to bring your little ones before the age of 4. The feeling of discomfort could disturb the most fragile. A single session is planned for 3-5 year olds.

Thereafter, sessions are organised according to age. You will find themes for the youngest, more scientific or even more family-oriented. One of the major advantages of the planetarium is that you can attend the same session several times.

The speakers take it in turns to present different information.

Other planetarium activities

To further your knowledge of astronomy, the universe and the stars, the planetarium offers practical workshops for children aged 7 to 12. Lasting about 2 hours, your little one will take part in scientific activities and can explore his or her ideas on a specific subject.

An astronomy school has even been established within the walls of the site for the most curious. Courses are offered as well as training for adults.

Observe the stars thanks to the Vigie-Ciel. This other activity aims to understand the phenomena of the sky. Shooting stars and meteorites will no longer hold any secrets for you!

Practical information to remember

Like a theatre, the Nantes planetarium has sessions at fixed times according to predefined ages. If you arrive late, you will be refused entry.

You are advised to book your seats online or by phone to make sure you get a seat at the right time.
