Discovering the Grand-Lieu Lake

Located south of Nantes, 30 minutes from our hotel, the Grand-Lieu Lake is a natural area of great beauty.

The Grand-Lieu Lake stands out for its exceptional biodiversity with 270 species of birds (the lake is the 2nd largest ornithological reserve in France!), more than 500 species of plants and numerous animal species.

A very fragile site, only accessible thanks to certain places specially fitted out to welcome the public.

Hiking: the tour of Lake Grand-Lieu

Surrounded by a 73-kilometre hiking trail, the Grand-Lieu lake is the perfect place for a walk in the heart of nature.
The departure is possible from several communes: Bouaye, Saint Aignan de Grand Lieu, Pont Saint-Martin or Passay.

This trail will lead you to various places where you can admire the Grand Lieu Lake such as the Ornithological Observatory of Passay and the House of the fishermen of the Grand-Lieu Lake.

Sites to visit

• The Abbey of Saint-Philibert-de-Grand-Lieu

Near the lake of Grand-Lieu, you will find a historical building: the Abbey of Saint-Philibert-de-Grand-Lieu. Built during the 9th century, the abbey church is the oldest monument in the department and is an essential site not to be missed during your trip to Grand-Lieu Lake.
 

• The Maison du Lac de Grand Lieu

This is one of the windows through which you can admire the beauty of Grand-Lieu Lake!
This place, which is open to visitors, invites you to discover the history of the area thanks to one of the many visit routes.

• The Ornithological Observatory of Passay

Reopening on 13 June 2022

Admire the biodiversity of the Grand-Lieu lake thanks to this observatory! It allows you to observe the 270 different species while preserving their tranquillity. Visits, supervised by a guide, present the actions taken to preserve the site and the birds that live there.
